I often am asked the questions in my counseling: "What should I be doing? What is my purpose?" My answer is always the same - "Do whatever you enjoy doing, as long as it is of service." The service can be towards other people, other life forms or to the Earth. Service is the answer to your prayers. It is a way to express kindness and gratitude; it is a way to learn appreciation and patience. You serve to help others, but most of all you help yourself. Service brings out the best in you and in others; it is a gift that you give unconditionally. Service should not be a chore or martyrdom as some provide it, but a joy and a blessing that you share, because you are blessed.
The principal service you can give to the world, however, is to first serve yourself. You reflect your perception of yourself into the world in every decision and action that you undertake. However well-intentioned your service might be, it still contains the emotional blockages and the misperceptions that you adhere to. Your purpose is not to change the world, but instead to change yourself. By changing yourself, you do change the world!
Service always serves the giver and the receiver in equal measure. Your purpose is not to stand in judgment, but to provide support when requested and help others to help themselves. The most valuable service you can give to others is to facilitate a rise in consciousness. Perception is tied directly to consciousness and as consciousness rises, perceptions shift. David Hawkins in his book, Power vs. Force, maps out a logarithmic scale of consciousness from 1 - 1000, where 1 represents the lowest and 1000 the highest consciousness levels. Each division represents a level of perception, somewhat different from the others. As you progress in consciousness, you move through successive perceptual fields, each containing its own thought forms and emotional patterns. When you are in that "field", you connect to the patterns within that level and believe that they are yours. Raising consciousness shifts you into another field containing somewhat different patterns. Spiritual growth can be defined as the successive upward movement in the scale of consciousness. Expressed as a gradient, the lower levels are denser and contain low frequency patterns. As you move higher, the frequency increases and density decreases. Hawkins says, "How we react depends upon the world we are reacting to. Who we become, as well as what we see, is determined by perception-which can be said, simply, to create the world."
In choosing an area of service, find something that you are passionate about. What do you enjoy most and how is it of service to others? What are your abilities and how can they be brought in line with your passion and your service? Remember that you are providing service for yourself as well as for others. Once you have settled upon an avenue of service, begin to develop it. If you need additional knowledge about what you intend to do, get it. If you need certification in your subject matter, acquire it. It may take some time to develop, but because you are passionate about what you are doing and enjoy the activity, each step of the journey will be enjoyable as well. Do not occupy your time with anything that is not uplifting to yourself and to others. Work from your heart center and focus your heart energy into all of your activities. Be creative, loving, and focused. Intention will be the force that opens doors and brings your service into manifestation. The power of your intention and your purpose will give you the support of nature and the Universe.
Some of you will want to become energy healers or already work in that area. This is a wonderful uplifting service that you can provide for others. Raising consciousness to the truth that energy follows thought, will allow the "patients" to heal themselves by taking responsibility for their own conditions. You facilitate that through your own gentle and loving support. The principles of energy healing can be utilized in many other service areas as well, such as nursing, elderly care, hospice, psychotherapy and massage therapy. All areas of service should incorporate energetic principles and use them to support and enhance the work being done. By uplifting others, you will uplift yourself and by serving others, you will serve yourself.
Your service should provide others with the opportunity to expand awareness and raise consciousness, but you cannot do that in a vacuum. Unless there is willingness and motivation on the part of the people you are working with, very little will be accomplished. "The most important element in facilitating an upward movement in consciousness", says Hawkins, "is an attitude of willingness, which opens up the mind through new means of appraisal to the possible validity of new hypotheses."
